You will enjoy all the amenities of playing as a guest at an exclusive Las Vegas country club, but instead of feeling like a guest, you’ll feel like a member for the day. The treatment you receive from the bag boys, the cart people, and the pro shop staff is all top-shelf. The bar, restaurant and pro shop are nothing less than beautiful and welcoming. Reputed to be the club of choice for Tiger Woods when he visits Vegas, Tiger is named on the scorecard as having shot a course record 33-31 sixty-four, so you’ve got something to shoot at. Rio Secco is also the home of Butch Harmon’s golf school, therefore you’ll see a lot of golfers practicing here. Once you hit the course, you’ll be challenged by its difficulty. The first few holes lull you into thinking: “This is pretty straight-ahead. I can score here.” But by the fourth or fifth hole your thinking will change as you begin to feel like a sacrificial lamb. Unless you’re hitting the ball long and straight, you’ll be bogeying a lot of holes. Rio Secco is a formidable 7332 yards from the black tees, 6946 from the blue and 6375 from the white. If you must break Tiger’s course record, get your butt back to the black tees. Blue is more my speed and as I mentioned earlier, you can get lulled by the first two par fours and until you get to the par three seventh, you’ll probably be tooling along pretty well. 7, 8, and 9 are the beginning of a really difficult series of holes with no let-up right through the 18th. The changes in elevation on almost every hole not only make the course interesting and beautiful, but add to its difficulty. Several holes meander through arroyos where the plush grass of the fairways are abutted by steep rock roughs that are really impossible to play out of. Most memorable was the 396 yard, par 4, 16th. From an elevated tee you look down on a long, narrow fairway with no bail-out area. As you near the large green with a tight, last shot, the back drop is a hundred foot high bluff that makes the hole breathtaking. The last two holes are back-to-back par fives with enough room for your drives, but the 18th is long, measuring 634 yards from the black and 601 from the blue tees. Current 2016 peak season rates range from $129-$199. Off season rates are typically $79-$159. Green fees include shared golf cart, practice balls, and bottled water on the cart. Individual Golf Reservations are taken 120 days in advance and group reservations are taken up to 6 months in advance. Rio Secco is located at: 2851 Grand Hills Dr. • Henderson, NV • 702-777-2400 •
