The Doctor Is In Dr. John Pierce, DO, ACOEP, ABAARM The InBody 770 Technological innovations continue to grow in the health industry, and medical professionals are using these new inventions to help optimize patient treatment. The InBody 770 is one that I have incorporated into our practice to help with physical therapy, patient analysis, and weight loss. You don’t have to be an inventor in the tech field to know that all human bodies can be different. Everyone possesses a different body type and putting a simple calculation for treatment by using height, gender, and weight just isn’t enough. The Inbody takes a deeper look into the body’s makeup. It offers two types of results sheets: body composition, and body water. It is a research-grade body composition analyzer. We are now able to measure your fat, muscle, and water levels in less than a minute, making pinching and dunking a thing of the past. There is no discomfort in measuring a patient’s level. You simply stand on the device and hold the hand electrodes to test. Safe, low-level currents are sent through the body through the hand and foot electrodes. In moments your results are delivered, and we can then look at your body composition. It will tell you your total body water level, dry lean mass, and body fat mass. Inbody also measures your visceral fat, which is the fat that surrounds your internal organs. It is recommended to maintain a visceral fat level under 10 and visceral fat area of 100 and under to minimize health risks associated with excess visceral fat. That is why it is so essential to monitor patients levels of this type of fat. The scan will also measure muscle fat to make a comparison between weight, skeletal muscle mass, and body fat mass. It gives an in-depth obesity analysis as well accurately measuring BMI and body fat percentages better than any other methods in the past. The machine also measures the lean parts of the body in relation to the individual’s ideal weight. The Basal Metabolic Rate is measured, which is the energy required to sustain vital functions while at rest. The Inbody calculated the BMR using lean body mass, therefore, should the examinee gain LBM during a weight management program, their BMR would also increase. The total body water/Lean Body Mass is measured as a percentage value. Knowing this ratio can provide additional information regarding the health status of the patient being tested. It can also use the electronic tracking of the body to determine cellular health. The doctor can save patient results in the body composition history on the InBody to help both to track the process before, during and after treatment. The University of Northern Colorado Cancer Rehabilitation Institute used the InBody to give exercise prescriptions to their cancer survivors. Needing a tool that would accurately measure the patients they treated and enhance the quality of their exercise prescriptions. The segmental lean analysis and other body composition outputs, the specialists a UNCCRI were able to improve on their prescriptions and help their cancer survivors to reach their rehabilitation goals. Their goal is to help their cancer survivors repair their bodies from the harsh after effects of cancer and cancer therapy. They aim to help them regain functional strength to be able to do the little things in life like going grocery shopping. They prescribe exercise in the same way that other facilities might prescribe medicine because, at UNCRRI, exercise is the medicine. By using the InBody, they can prescribe more detailed therapies and more precise exercise interventions that are unique to each of their clients. If you are looking to lose weight, recover from an injury, and/or up your training game at the gym, an InBody 770 scan might be something to add to your plan. It can help your physical therapist track your progress and recovery after an injury, and get athletes in peak form. A scan is also reasonable, with charges for one beginning around $25 per test. It’s my philosophy that to treat a patient, the more information that I can gather the better to find optimal health for all my clients. I like this new technology and use it often in my practice. Stile, MD – Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Over my last 14 years in private practice as a plastic surgeon in Las Vegas, I’ve observed many changes in my specialty. Most notable of these changes is the patient profile of my practice. In 2004 my practice was comprised of 98% female patients and less than 2% male patients. A dramatic shift has taken place now, with men making up to 20% of my daily patient encounters. I’m sure that much of this is the result of the diminishing stigma associated with men having cosmetic treatments as well as the greater presence of high-profile men and celebrities openly discussing their experiences in the media. In my practice, the most sought after surgical procedures by men, in order of greatest frequency include: lipo-sculpture (aka liposuction), eyelid lift surgery, gynecomastia correction (male breast reduction), face and neck lifts and tummy-tucks. Similarly, the demand for Botox, fillers and skincare services have also had a huge increase in my male patients. The reasons my male patients have for wanting these surgeries include, the need to remain competitive in the workforce, re-entering the dating world or just wanting to look their best when diet and exercise alone aren’t enough. Lipo-sculpture, also known as liposuction, has always been and remains the number one procedure requested by and performed on men in my practice. The most frequent areas that I contour in my male patients include the abdomen, flanks (love handles), chest (either as part of a gynecomastia correction or to make their “pecs look more defined”) and under the chin (sub-mental double-chin) and neck.
I approach body sculpting and contouring with surgery much like an artist would approach a sculpture. For me, this cosmetic procedure is, in fact, a form of living sculpture. Many of us struggle with “problem areas.” These areas are those known as diet and exercise resistant “fat deposits.” In other words, they are the first to show signs (get larger) of a less-than optimal diet and exercise program, or those areas that are the least improved by adherence to a responsible diet and exercise program. For many of us, the tendency to gain weight in these areas is genetic. I use a tumescent liposuction technique when performing contouring procedures. This is one of the oldest and safest methods used for this type of surgery. Even though it is more physically demanding and time-consuming then other methods such as ultrasound assisted, laser or Vaser techniques, the results are in my opinion superior. There are fewer contour abnormalities and certainly none of the burns that may be associated with the other techniques. I perform liposuction or lipo-sculpture procedures with the assistance of general anesthesia. This assures my patient’s improved comfort and allows me better control and the ability to be more aggressive. General anesthesia, as well as pre and post-operative care, are provided by our Board Certified Anesthesiologist. The tumescent liposuction technique utilizes a large volume of a very dilute solution of local anesthetic (lidocaine) and adrenaline (epinephrine) mixed in normal saline. This mixture is infiltrated (injected) through a series of very small incisions into the fatty area(s) the patient wishes to have eliminated or contoured. The fat is then aspirated (sucked out) using a series of small cannulas following the operative plan and the patient’s desired outcome. The incisions are closed using a single stitch for each of these incisions. Up to five liters of fat may be safely removed using this technique. Dressings are placed over the cannula sites and held in place by surgical tape. These dressings are further secured by a specialized surgical garment that is worn for up to four weeks following your procedure. In addition, to support, the garment helps to shape and optimize your final result.
I perform this and other cosmetic procedures in one of my state-of-the-art operating rooms. Premium surgical services venter is a free standing, fully accredited ambulatory surgery center. Our surgical center is licensed by the state of Nevada and is also federally regulated. This center is the only privately owned surgical center dedicated to the specialty of plastic surgery that has both these accreditations in the state of Nevada. Liposuction and lipo-sculpture are an outpatient surgical procedure. After surgery, and following a short stay in our post-surgical care unit, patients are discharged to return home. Generally, post-operative instructions call for rest, but patients are encouraged to begin moving/walking as tolerated and immediately following their procedure. Patients describe the discomfort associated with cosmetic lipo-sculpture surgery as ranging from minor discomfort, “sunburn-like,” or “feels like a hard workout” to significant soreness. The perception of pain is a uniquely personal experience depending on a patient’s ability to tolerate discomfort. However, this discomfort is effectively controlled with a short course of prescribed oral pain medication. My patients can resume most normal activity not requiring lifting of heavy objects or exertion one week following surgery. Full activity, including exercise and resistance training, can begin following the second week. Complications are rare. Lipo-sculpture is a low-impact, short down-time, minimally uncomfortable procedure that offers my patients a definitive solution to their contour issues. Whether my male patients just want to get rid of their stubborn love handles or they wish to “carve out their abs” and add definition to their pecs, lipo-sculpture is the way to achieve these goals. Having had this procedure myself, I can confidently state that this procedure works and the results are long lasting! The most compelling fact is that I can do more for most patients with two hours of lipo-sculpture surgery than they can achieve in 200 hours in the gym.
